Understand what you recite
Many Muslims in America can read the Quran fluently and still not know what most verses mean without a translation beside them. That is not a lack of devotion; it is simply that recitation and comprehension are different skills. A Quranic Arabic course focuses on the second one: the vocabulary, word forms and sentence structures that appear again and again in the Quran.
What the course focuses on
- High-frequency vocabulary. A relatively small set of words makes up a large share of the Quranic text. Learning them first gives you quick, real progress.
- Roots and patterns. Arabic builds words from three-letter roots. Once you see the pattern, unfamiliar words become far easier to work out.
- Essential grammar. Enough nahw and sarf to tell who is doing what to whom in a verse, and why a word ends the way it does.
- Reading with understanding. Working through passages with your tutor, word by word and then as a whole.
Who it is for
This course suits adults who can already read Arabic script, even slowly. If the letters are still new to you, start with Arabic for beginners and move on when you are ready; your tutor can plan that path with you.
Learning at your pace
Because classes are one-on-one, you are not tied to a group's speed. You choose your days, book any time in your US time zone, and spend extra time on what you find hard. Some learners like to pair this course with a female teacher; you can request one when you book.
Quranic Arabic or Modern Standard Arabic?
Quranic Arabic is classical; Modern Standard Arabic is its modern descendant used in books and media. They share grammar and much vocabulary, so either one helps with the other. If your main reason for learning is the Quran, start here.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to read Arabic first?
It helps. If you cannot read the script yet, begin with the beginners course and move on to Quranic Arabic afterwards.
Is this the same as tajweed?
No. Tajweed is about correct recitation; this course is about understanding the meaning and language of the Quran.
